Ath-lak-uh-dem-uh-thon  noun

(1) A multi-discipline athletic/academic team event within the newly emerging field of athlacademics.

(2) A fundraising event in support of the King’s Chorus which aims to engage the hearts, minds, and bodies of community members at large.

(3) A seriously fun time!

A short history

The King’s Chorus Athlacademathon begun as a way to fundraise for and promote our spring 2012 concert, Missa Gaia or Earth Mass. The Earth Mass, as its name suggests, was a celebration of the Earth and its many creatures. In searching for an exciting fundraising initiative we knew two things: it had to be outside and had to let out our animal nature! The Kingsian Carnival of academic might and athletic prowess that is the Athlacademathon was born!

How to get involved

Option 1: Form a team! Grab four friends, come up with a super intimidating team name, and start collecting pledges. If you don’t have potential team mates, you can still sign up as an individual. On April 6^th, when you register, we will assign you to a team. All the information you need for forming a team is included in this packet.

Option 2: If you don’t want to be an active participant in the Athlacademathon, you can still be involved by sponsoring either a team or an individual. Teams have to raise a minimum of $50 to compete but the team that raises the most money will win a prize.

A concert in celebration of springtime renewal and awakening. We will be singing Paul Halley’s suite, Love Songs for Springtime, as well as his glorious setting of the Appalachian hymn Wondrous Love. Our dear director could not resist throwing into the program also  works by Gabrielli and Handl as well.

They have been described by New York Time’s critic Bob Zeidler as “alternately sweet and droll”. He later remarked that Wondrous Love  in ”Halley’s arrangement brings forth the heroic dimension of [the] work”.

Workshop: April 13th, 2013

Nick Halley leads the 3rd annual Sheer Joy of Singing workshop, accompanied by members of the King’s Chorus and percussion genius Richard Baughman. All concert goers may attend the workshop at no extra charge. The workshop is open to all members of high school, church and community choirs in the area. Tickets can be purchased at the Shop on the Corner or at the door, General $20, Student $10.  Registration for the workshop can be made by contacting Ruth McConnell at 902-634-9994 or by e-mail at barbara.butler@ns.sympatico.ca.

The King’s Chorus and Capella Regalis Men and Boys Choir, under the direction of Nick Halley, will perform the Paul Winter Consort’s wild and grand Missa Gaia or Earth Mass in honour of Earth Day on April 22.

The concert will take place at Convocation Hall, Acadia University, in Wolfville, on Thursday April 19th at 7.30 PM, at St John’s Anglican Church, Lunenburg, on Friday, April 20th at 7.30 PM, and at First Baptist Church, Oxford Street, Halifax, on April 21st at 2.00 PM.

Missa Gaia is a jubilant contemporary mass, based on a traditional mass setting, but added to which are the songs of the whale, loon, and the wolf and the elemental power of African and Brazilian percussion. “I envisioned a celebration that was both ecumenical and ecological,” says composer Paul Winter, “one that would embrace all life on Earth.”

Performing with the two choirs will be the well-known American gospel singer soloist Theresa Thomason, who, according to Paul Halley, a former member of the Paul Winter Consort and one of the composers of the Missa Gaia, “never fails to bring audiences to their feet, her singing is so powerful” There will also be a band of 10 musicians, including Paul Halley on piano, Nick Halley on drums, and Dani Oore on saxophones.

(2) An event supporting the Ecology Action Centre and our own King’s Chorus earthday concert Missa Gaia (take a peek at KingsChorus.com)which aims to engage the hearts, minds and bodies of community members at large. (3) A seriously fun environmental benefit.

The Athlacademathon will consist of several on-campus (meet at the King’s Quad) events (planet ball, ultimate Frisbee, dance competition, tug of war, soccer a group run and an essay writing contest*) in which registered teams can fundraise for a good cause and compete against one another to achieve overall top scores and win prizes. Each team will consist of 5 people
who are committed to the event and are willing to fundraise and seek out pledges from family, businesses, sympathetic community members etc.

The majority of funds raised will go to benefit the Ecology Action Center based alternative transportation advocates: Bike Again. Bike again is a volunteer run community initiative whose mandate is to ensure that everyone has access to a bicycle and to educate and empower the general public concerning bike repair. All day long we will be running a barbeque and pumping tasteful music for your delight (so bring your friends!). After the final event, the essays will be graded and overall scores calculated. Winners will be announced and prizes distributed to the top-ranked teams and the team who raised the most money.

Teams will be asked to fundraise a minimum of $50 for the event and there will be a special prize awarded to our most dedicated fundraisers. So get out there and drum up some support!

Step one: Register your team (Forms available at the main desk of the King’s A&A building). Step two: fundraise for a worthy cause. Step three: get lots of fun exercise.

*Each team will elect an essay writing champion. This champion will be the only individual from that team who
may participate in the writing. The topic will be announced at the time of the event. Dr. Hankey will be presiding.
